How to Get the Most Out of Therapy

These are a few things to think about as you begin your journey to health and strength:

  1. Choose wisely. Do a little shopping and find someone who seems to fit, someone you believe you can trust. Ask for a referral from a trusted friend; read through therapist profiles online; do phone consultations.
  2. Commit. Just like any other challenge, the more time and energy you put into therapy, the more you’ll get out of it. And like many other challenges, change through therapy will take some time.
  3. Be honest. If you are honest with yourself and your therapist about who you are (both the good parts and the not-so-good parts), about what you are feeling, and about what has happened to you, things will move much more quickly. The more hiding you do, the longer it will take. Take the risk of honest self-disclosure.
  4. Try new things. Spending one hour a week with your therapist will only make a difference in your life if you try new things at home and in your relationships.
  5. Notice. Become aware of old behaviors/thoughts/feelings that you want to change. And notice when they begin to change.
  6. Pray. Ask God for help in choosing a therapist and committing to therapy. Ask Him to give you strength to be honest and to take healthy risks. And know that He notices and rejoices with you as you become healthier and stronger!
